Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Submissions Due December 22, 2023!
Students in grades 7-12 are invited to participate in the Mississippi regional writing portion of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Students have the opportunity to be recognized locally for their work in the following writing categories:
Critical Essay – Dramatic Script – Flash Fiction – Journalism – Humor – Novel Writing – Personal Essay/Memoir – Poetry – Science Fiction/Fantasy – Short Story – Writing Portfolio
Regional winners will be honored at a ceremony at the Eudora Welty House and Garden on April 14, 2024. Gold key winners go on to compete nationally with some of the most talented young writers in the country. Honorees at the high school level are also invited to participate at no or reduced cost in the McMullan Young Writers Workshop at Millsaps College over the summer.
Educators and students should register online at artandwriting.org. Writing entries must be electronically uploaded. Parent/guardian permissions are obtained and payments or fee waiver requests may also be made electronically through the portal.artandwriting.org
Submission Deadline: All submissions, complete with online permission and payment, must be received by 5:00 pm Friday, December 22, 2023. LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ENTERED INTO THE COMPETITION.
Submission Fee: This region adheres to the standardized submission fees established by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. These include a $10 fee per individual submission and a $30 fee per portfolio submission.
Fee Waiver: Any student who finds the fees a barrier to participation may request a submission fee waiver online.
